About the images

New York artist David Hirmes filled balloons and kitchen bowls with water, froze them, and photographed the results by flashlight in his darkened apartment. "It occurred to me that I might be able to capture some of the beauty I had seen in moving water with ice," says Hirmes, whose resulting images display both scientific precision and fantastic abstraction.
