About the images

Anastasios John Hart, a post-doctoral researcher in mechanical engineering at MIT, created these images of strange frozen landscapes by accident, while developing carbon nanotubes for applications. After heating and resolidifying a silicon wafer, he put the silicon under a scanning electron microscope to study the edges, and "lo and behold, there were these beautiful structures," he says.
