About the images
University of São Paulo biologist Bruno Vellutini takes pictures of live organisms under the microscope to document and study the various stages of Echinoderms (sea biscuits) and to tackle larger questions about ocean ecosystems. "Besides being very beautiful, it's extremely informative," he says. Different light sources reveal different structures: Pluteus larvae, for example, showing red-pigmented cells under white light, reveal their skeletons under polarized light.
